Το συγκεκριμένο μάθημα προϋποθέτει πολύ καλή γνώση της αγγλικής και της ελληνικής και εστιάζεται στη μελέτη των μορφοσυντακτικών χαρακτηριστικών  των δύο γλωσσών. Σε θεωρητικό επίπεδο θα συζητηθούν θέματα που αφορούν την περιγραφική και επεξηγηματική επάρκεια διάφορων συντακτικών θεωριών (σύγκριση Τυπολογίας και Παραμετροποίησης στο πλαίσιο του Μινιμαλισμού). Θα καλυθούν φαινόμενα όπως: η έννοια του ‘υποκειμένου’ στην αγγλική και στην ελληνική γλώσσα, διαφορές στη σειρά των όρων, η οριστικότητα στην ονοματική φράση, παρεμφατικές και μη-παρεμφατικές δομές, ο χρόνος και η ρηματική όψη, οι συμπληρωματικές προτάσεις, τα οποία, όπως έχουν δείξει έρευνες, προκαλούν προβλήματα κατά την εκμάθηση της δεύτερης γλώσσας (Γ2).

The main objective of this course is to help undergraduate students get acquainted with a variety of styles developed and practised by male and female, mainstream and non mainstream dramatists of the last four decades in the U.S. Emphasis will also be placed on the development of interpretive and critical skills in evaluating contemporary drama.

Η χρήση των Ηλεκτρονικών Σωμάτων Κειμένων (Η.Σ.Κ.) στη γλωσσολογική έρευνα έχει αποδειχθεί ιδιαίτερα σημαντική τα τελευταία 30 χρόνια αφού τα Η.Σ.Κ. αποτελούν ένα απαραίτητο ερευνητικό εργαλείο σε πολλούς τομείς της γλωσσολογίας. Σκοπός του μαθήματος αυτού είναι: (α) η ενημέρωση των φοιτητών σχετικά με τα Η.Σ.Κ. και τη χρήση τους στη μελέτη της γλώσσας και τη διδασκαλία της και (β) η παροχή γνώσεων σχετικά με την επεξεργασία υλικού των Η.Σ.Κ. για την επιλογή και δημιουργία διδακτικού υλικού. Ειδικότερα, το μάθημα ! θα αποτελείται από ένα θεωρητικό και ένα πρακτικό μέρος. Στο θεωρητικό κομμάτι, θα εξεταστούν τα παρακάτω θέματα: (α) ιστορία και εξέλιξη των Η.Σ.Κ., (β) είδη των Η.Σ.Κ. και (γ) πιθανές εφαρμογές τους. Το πρακτικό μέρος του μαθήματος θα παρουσιάσει τη χρήση των δεδομένων των Η.Σ.Κ. για τη δημιουργία διδακτικού υλικού και θα προσφέρει στους /στις φοιτητές/ήτριες τις μεθοδολογικές αρχές που ορίζουν τη χρήση των Η.Σ.Κ. στη γλωσσική διδασκαλία.Το μάθημα επιδιώκει να βοηθήσει τους/τις φοιτητές/ήτριες ως προς τα παρακάτω. •Να εξοικειωθούν με το επιστημονικό πεδίο της Γλωσσολογίας των Σωμάτων Κειμένων και με την ορολογία που σχετίζεται με τη δημιουργία των Η.Σ.Κ. και τις εφαρμογές τους •Να κατανοήσουν τη χρήση και τις εφαρμογές των Η.Σ.Κ. στη λεξικογραφία, στην έρευνα για την απόκτηση της Γ1 και Γ2, στη μετάφραση και τη διδασκαλία •Να σχεδιάσουν και να πραγματοποιήσουν έρευνα σε Γ1 και Γ2 Η.Σ.Κ. με τη βοήθεια ειδικού λογισμικού •Να σχεδιάσουν διδακτικό υλικό με βάση δεδομένα από τα Η.Σ.Κ. Με την επιτυχή ολοκλήρωση αυτού του μαθήματος ο/η φοιτητής/ήτρια θα πρέπει μέσω της προσέγγιση της γλωσσολογίας σωμάτων κειμένων να μπορεί όχι απλώς να βοηθήσει τη γλωσσολογική του/της έρευνα, αλλά και να μεταμορφώσει την ίδια την οπτική του/της για τη γλώσσα. Με βάση την πεποίθηση αυτή οι φοιτητές/τριες θα επιστρέψουν στην ανάλυση της γλώσσας, έχοντας κερδίσει όχι μόνο τη γνωριμία με πολύτιμα εργαλεία, αλλά και μια καινούργια ματιά στο πολύπλοκο αυτό αντικείμενο.

The course aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to phonetics and phonology. Phonetics studies human speech sounds as physical entities, i.e. how they are produced, transmitted and perceived. Phonology studies sounds as linguistics units, how speakers of a language use sounds to express meaning. Special emphasis will be given to the phonetics and phonology of English and the main theoretical concepts of both fields will be discussed in relation to it. The course will begin with information on the speech production mechanism and the articulation of English consonants and vowels. The IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) symbols and diacritics used in transcription will be introduced. It will then examine the difference between phonemically distinct segments vs. allophonic variants with phonological data from English and a wide range of languages. The course will then proceed to a description of syllable structure and weight as well as English stress, intonation and rhythm. Major connected speech processes will also be discussed including assimilation, deletion, insertion, and reduction. Students will have the opportunity to have extensive practice in phonetic transcription throughout the course.

An overview course examining American literature and culture from the colonial era to the end of the 19th century. The aim of the course is to introduce students to the historical, socio-political and cultural context that defined the US transition from a colonial to an independent country and its transformation from an agricultural to an industrial country. Students will be exposed to a wide range of texts representing the core principles and ideology of Puritanism, the Enlightenment, Romanticism, Realism and Naturalism. 

This course sets out to explore some central themes and concepts that have defined American literature, history and culture throughout the 20th century until today. Students will become familiar with major socio-political events, which had a tremendous impact on the political and ideological development of the United States and its role on the world stage, as well as with major literary trends.

Learning outcomes and competences: Students will practice reading closely a variety of texts (fiction, non fiction, poetry, films, speeches etc.); Will gain knowledge of certain key historical, social and political events that influenced American literary production; Will re-evaluate and re-assess certain important notions in relation to an array of themes (land, the American dream, race, gender, ethnicity, technology, environment, politics, urban space, 9/11).

The textual material that the students are invited to read for the course varies between semesters.

The course may also host guest lectures/seminars on specialized themes.

This course focuses on the interdisciplinary study of urban space with particular attention paid to major post-1945 American cities such as New York, Los Angeles and other. With urbanism developing in tandem with major socio-cultural and political challenges, students will be invited to approach urban spaces or cityscapes as romantic, escapist, ghettoized, commodified, and mediated  places whose development is intertwined with the experiences of its residents. This course is inspired by the “Urban Environments in Transition” initiative (www.asrp.gr/urban).

This course aims at offering a fresh perspective on American narratives of war that lament the loss of innocence and highlight an implied struggle for gaining back various freedoms. The lectures deal with the permeation of horrendous events in American society and examine American writers’, poets’, filmmakers’ and artists’ efforts to come to terms with moral decadence and post-war trauma through narrative and artistic creation.

The selected literary texts span from the two Great Wars World War I (1914-18) and World War II (1939-45) to the newer faces of “War on Terror” in the twenty-first century. These examples come from literature, poetry and popular culture (TV, film adaptations, documentaries, graphic novels, weblogs and social networking sites).

Samuel Beckett is a huge figure in twentieth-century drama, experimenting widely with theatre experience as a whole. Our focus will be on his work with dramatic language - the ways his plays introduce a new dramatic/performance idiom in which the text assumes more functions besides its traditional task of storytelling, while new channels of “meaning making” are activated. The purpose of this course is twofold: to introduce students to the intricacies of Beckett’s writing, as well as to shed light on how his experimentation in the theatre has been reflected / echoed / resisted and carried further in plays of the post-Beckettian period. A collection of exemplary dramatic texts will provide the necessary material for analysis and discussion in class

This course aims to provide students with an understanding of a significant and influential literary genre within a broad historical context (from the mid-eighteenth to the end of the nineteenth century). We will concentrate on three classic gothic novels (Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Bram Stoker's Dracula) but will also consider gothic features in the literature and art of the period. At the same time we shall explore the genre’s relation to notions of identity, sexuality, gender, power and imperialism. Attention will be given to the specific socio-historical conditions which produced the gothic form as well as to the ways elements of the genre (e.g. the fantastic, its psychological dimension) persisted throughout the nineteenth century, undergoing various transformations.

Στόχος του υποχρεωτικού αυτού μαθήματος είναι να προσφέρει στους φοιτητές/τριες βασική εκπαίδευση: στη χρήση υπολογιστών με στόχο την ανάπτυξη δεξιοτήτων επικοινωνίας, αξιολόγησης και χρήσης βιβλιογραφικών πηγών και δεδομένων, αλλά και στην καλλιέργεια και χρήση του ακαδημαϊκού λόγου και στην περαιτέρω κατάρτισή τους σε θέματα έρευνας θεμάτων λογοτεχνίας και γλωσσολογίας.

Το μάθημα αυτό εστιάζεται σε σημαντικούς Αμερικανούς/-νίδες πεζογράφους, όπως ο Saul Bellow, John Updike, William Gibson, Leslie Marmon Silko, Jamaica Kincaid, Don DeLillo κ.ά., καλύπτοντας την χρονική περίοδο 1950-9/11. Συγκεκριμένα οι φοιτητές/τριες:

•Εστιάζονται στην ανάλυση αφηγημάτων, αποσπασμάτων από μυθιστορήματα, και ένα μυθιστόρημα καθώς και στην ανάγνωση συγκεκριμένων θεωρητικών δοκιμίων για το μενταμοντέρνο •Εξοικειώνονται με το πλουραλιστικό χαρακτήρα της μεταμοντέρνας γραφής και τις διαφορετικές συγγραφικές τάσεις που αναπτύσσονται •Ενημερώνονται για τις κοινωνικο-πολιτισμικές τάσεις αλλά και το πολιτικό πλαίσιο που διαμόρφωσαν τη γραφή του καθενός/καθεμιάς πεζογράφου που εξετάζεται στο μάθημα αυτό.

Διανέμεται μυθιστόρημα και σχετική βιβλιογραφία.

Αξιολόγηση: Παρουσιάσεις, σύντομες εκθέσεις, τελικές εξετάσεις ή/και ερευνητικές εργασίες.

Το μάθημα αυτό εστιάζεται στη μελέτη των πιο αντιπροσωπευτικών τάσεων που αναπτύχθηκαν στα πλαίσια της σύγχρονης Αμερικανικής ποιητικής παραγωγής κάτω από τη θεωρητική ομπρέλλα του μεταμοντέρνου καλύπτοντας την χρονική περίοδο 1950-σήμερα. Συγκεκριμένα οι φοιτητές/τριες: •Εστιάζονται στην κατανόηση της πειραματικής ποιητικής γραφής και στην ανάγνωση ποιημάτων που προέρχονται από τη Γενιά Μπητ, την «εξομολογητική» ποίηση, τους ποιητές «Μπλακ Μάουντεν», την πρώτη και δεύτερη γενιά των ποιητών της «Σχολής της Νέας Υόρκης», ποίηση περφόρμανς με αναφορά σε Αφρικανο-Αμερικανίδες ποιήτριες, υπερκειμενική και ηλεκτρονική ποίηση κ.ά •Εξοικειώνονται με την ανάγνωση δοκιμίων που έχουν γραφτεί από τους ίδιους τους ποιητές και τα εξετάζουν μέσα στο ευρύτερο θεωρητικό πλαίσιο του μεταμοντέρνου •Ενημερώνονται για τις κοινωνικές/πολιτισμικές/καλλιτεχνικές τάσεις αλλά και το πολιτικό πλαίσιο που επέδρασε στη διαμόρφωση της γραφής του καθενός/καθεμιάς ποιητού/τριας που εξετάζεται στο μάθημα.
